Volunteer Spotlight

I am a volunteer at Covenant Care Services.

I began volunteering in the spring of 2004, after retiring from bookkeeping at my husband’s business. Long before retirement I knew that God wanted me to volunteer somewhere I could be involved in the pro-life efforts. My husband and I were praying about where that would be when we attended Covenant’s annual fundraising banquet. Iris Archer, the director, began her ministry report by talking about one of her passions, the Georgia bulldawgs. As she spoke,  my husband leaned over & whispered, “What’s there to pray about?” So the decision was made.

There was an adoption scheduled for 11 a.m. on my first day at the office. The foster family delivered a precious baby boy about an hour before. Someone had to hold him and rock him and I was the volunteer. I remember calling my husband to tell him what I was doing. There was a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes as I got to witness the adoptive parents see their little baby boy for the first time. Then the staff gathered for the adoption ceremony that Iris lead. This was to be the first of many of those beautiful moments I would get to be a part of. This was what the ministry was all about and I was hooked.

Now my week-to-week duties vary. There is copying, filing, shredding, organizing, answering phones, and whatever else is needed at the time. When I spend hours shredding or copying I realize that this is freeing up valuable time for the caseworkers & others on staff. It makes the mundane so rewarding. It’s my contribution to a ministry that is touching the lives of birth moms, babies, and adoptive families. It is incredible to be a part of something so much bigger.

The staff had made me feel welcomed and appreciated. What an incredible group of ladies I have come to know, love, and respect. I would never have imagined the time, energy, devotion, and love these women have if I were not a part of this ministry. These are the true heroes.

I have had the privilege of serving on two banquet committees and chairing two fundraisers. It was an honor to be asked and through these to become more involved in both raising support and making our community more aware of this ministry.

My greatest reward and biggest blessing came October 18, 2005 when my granddaughter was born. Covenant Care, in God’s sovereign plan, brought a young birthmother and my son and daughter-in-law together. Adoption is nothing short of a miracle and we have our own little miracle to prove it.

If you’re in Christ, you have your own adoption story. Read about it in Ephesians 1 and praise Him!!! “Praise be to the God & Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For He chose us…” Eph. 1:3-4a
