Unless the Lord Build a House…
By Iris M. Archer
Psalm 127:1 says, Unless the Lord build a house, They labor in vain who build it.
If you look closely at this verse, there is really no additional comment that needs to be made by way of explanation. It is short, succinct and to the point. But as I look around, it is easy to conclude that the truth of that verse has not worked its way into our culture. To say we are in a cultural high tide of dysfunction as many families are being swept out to sea and tossed about with disastrous results, is an understatement with massive implications! If there was ever a time to appreciate the worth of God building the family, it is now!
The heart of what we do at Covenant Care is to place children into families in which the Lord has prepared beforehand. The cornerstone foundation for a solid home is for a man and a woman to be joined together in Holy Matrimony, first committed to God, through faith in Christ Jesus and to then to each other. Once these assurances are settled, then God, as we are willing, helps us to construct and add to the foundation, to make it even more stable in order to raise a child.
Have you ever noticed what good, strong, Christian families look like? There is no particular prototype in terms of looks, position or economic means. What we do see is respect, genuine caring, unconditional love, an ability to forgive, and compassion for one another. We also see these families are stable, have a strong value system and the ability to set appropriate boundaries. Home for these families is equivalent to a safe haven. Because we all have a fallen nature, these families are not perfect, but there seems to be an underlying ability to eventually learn from mistakes and develop and progress in the right direction. They can do this because their relationship with God is at the center of their lives!
Imagine just for a moment that every child born in the world was going to grow up in a two parent Christian family! Sounds like a pie in the sky dream, doesn’t it? What if we could picture every child in the United States or even the State of Georgia would grow up in a two-parent Christian family. Still sounds daunting, doesn’t it? Suppose Covenant Care could reach 10% of the birth families whose children are now in state foster care? Do you know that if only 10% of those chose adoption, there would be an additional 140 children to grow up in a stable two parent Christian family!
God is continually building homes, but sadly many of them are not filled with children! Our culture has chosen to disregard the lives of little ones by throwing them on the altar of convenience. Every year CCS is inundated with calls from families longing to adopt! Our mission as the body of Christ is to bring Him glory and what better way to do that than to see lives of children saved and then placed into two parent Christian families.
