She has done a good and beautiful thing to Me” / Mark 14:3-11

By Vicki Colls, Birth Mother Caseworker for South East Georgia

“While He (Jesus) was in Bethany at the home of Simon, the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His Head. There came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard”. and she broke the vial and poured it over His head”.

Tradition states a woman in Jesus’ time had to have a dowry -- something of value to be considered suitable for marriage. As referenced in vs. 5 of this passage, the nard she brought to Jesus was very valuable. This woman came to Jesus offering to Him all on this earth she had of value. “She broke” her ties to the most precious, most valuable item she owned. She came to the Living Savior and trusted Him to honor her sacrifice and to protect what she holds precious

What did Jesus have to say about her gift? Vs. 6 “But Jesus said, ‘Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good and beautiful thing to Me.” Vs. 9 “Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.” WOW! Do you hear it? Do you sense the understanding, the compassion, the authority, the ACCEPTANCE and APPROVAL of her sacrifice by the Living Savior, Jesus Christ!! Do you hear it? Do you feel the Love? Do you feel the validation from the ONE true God? It overwhelms me! And makes me wonder, do I value Jesus as she does?

At this point in the scripture, I think instantly to our birth mothers. Many of the women Covenant Care serves are broken, searching, and looking to The One true source of Love. On adoption day, each comes to the same scary place the woman in the scriptures came to, asking herself, “Will Jesus see my adoption plan as a good thing? Can I trust Him?” So she breaks her physical bond to her child and creates an emotional and spiritual bond that is irreplaceable. And there Jesus speaks through a Covenant Care Caseworker who stands with tender and loving eyes ready to accept and honor her sacrifice, as we say, “you have done a good and beautiful thing! As your child grows, what you have done will also be spoken of in memory of you! You are treasured and accepted and loved and Jesus will protect your child.”
