Transracial adoption refers to an adoptive experience in which the parents and children have different racial/ethnic identities. This presentation focuses on important considerations related to transracial adoption including trends in transracial adoptions, fostering positive racial identity development in adopted children, cultivating family conversations about race, and strengthening adoptive parents’ cultural competence. Attendees will hear quotes and stories from transracial adoptees and their parents.
More about Dr. Giordano: Amanda L. Giordano, PhD, LPC is an associate professor at the University of Georgia. She specializes in two topic areas: addictions counseling and multiculturalism. Dr. Giordano has taught graduate level diversity/multicultural counseling courses for over a decade. In addition, she has worked with several agencies to provide trainings on transracial adoption. Dr. Giordano is passionate about supporting multiracial families formed by adoption through her presentations and community trainings.
