If you’re searching for an answer to your question, “How do I put my baby up for adoption?” You’re in the right place! Because while adoption can be complex, we aim to simplify the process. Here are FIVE steps to making an adoption plan in Georgia.

How to Make an Adoption Plan in Five Steps

  1. Reach out.

Connect with an agency licensed in Georgia that can help you in person, like Covenant Care Services. You don’t need to figure it out alone! Work with someone who’s familiar with navigating the process and knows local laws. That way, you don’t have to wonder what happens next.

  2. Be ready to share.

You’ll connect with a counselor and begin sharing your needs and desires so your counselor can learn how to support you best. The counselor will ask questions about your social and medical history to help them know your options for a family match.

  3. The choice is yours.

Your counselor’s job is to make sure you know about all your options. For example, you have the option to choose a family and meet them before delivery. You even decide whether you want them to come to the hospital. You choose the level of contact you desire after the baby is placed with the adoptive family.

  4. Time to take legal steps.

Georgia law says that moms can sign legal documents for adoption when the baby is at least 24 hours old. You then have four days to change your mind (which is called a revocation period). These legal documents are usually signed in the hospital and should be fully explained to you so there are no surprises. A licensed agency can handle all of this for you, so there’s no need for an extra attorney to be involved.

  5. Stay in touch.

Your counselor would love to continue supporting you even after the adoption. We will be there for you as you process the adoption. We even continue to support you in person when you have visits with your child. We would love to introduce you to other moms who’ve made an adoption plan through our free annual retreat!
